Question on tomato juice

I am a diabetic and on pills but have an appointment with an
endocrinologist at the end of the month because I will probably have to
go on insulin due to the prednisone I am on for something else. The
blood sugars just won’t go down while I am on it. I seem to be
drinking a lot of tomato juice lately and want to know if I should be
doing that. I buy the type with half of the sodium but I drink about a
can a day. Looking forward to your respones. Thanks for your help.
Joanne.

Hello Joanne, I LUVVV tomato juice as well as spicy V-8 veggie juice.

It raises my BG so high,so quickly and so predictably that I keep the
small cans(7gms/carbs) in my car and gym bag to treat any Low BG.

So, I could never just drink it without killing Bg. At least I get it if
I’m low( which doesn’t happen very often).

Anyway, we are all different so before drinking a can check your BG with
your meter, then again at 1 hour then 2 hours after. The numbers will
tell you what you want, excuse me,need to know:).

This is getting a little off topic for this group, but tomato juice is
relative low in carbs - only about 15 grams per 12 oz. - and has a low
glycemic index - 38. If you drink a 48 oz. can, it could be a
problem. That would contain 60 grams of carbs.

Everyone is different so you need to test.

    Hi Joanne,

Tomato juice in moderation is pretty healthy, even for someone with DM. My
question is what size can are you drinking? And what other foods are you
    eating?

So much depends on your metabolism and what it can handle. I can handle a small
can of V-8 (my favorite tomato juice), but I can’t go crazy with it.

I know because I test frequently. What does your meter tell you?

    Dianne
